Description

These Apple Fritters are crispy on the outside and tender on the inside, combining the sweet tartness of apples with warm cinnamon and a hint of vanilla. Fried to golden perfection and coated in a cinnamon-sugar mixture, they make a delightful treat perfect for breakfast or dessert.

Ingredients

Wet Ingredients

  • 1 large beaten egg
  • 1 cup (235ml) milk
  • 1 cup finely chopped or grated apple (about 1 apple)
  • 3 tablespoons orange juice (optional)
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

Dry Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup (50g) granulated sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 2 cups (250g) all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon cornstarch

For Frying and Coating

  • 1-2 quarts vegetable oil for frying
  • 2 teaspoons cinnamon
  • 2 tablespoons sugar

Instructions

  1. Prepare Wet Ingredients: In a large bowl, whisk together the beaten egg, milk, chopped or grated apple, granulated sugar, salt, cinnamon, orange juice (if using), and vanilla extract until well combined.
  2. Combine Dry Ingredients: In a separate bowl, sift or stir together the all-purpose flour, baking powder, and cornstarch to ensure even distribution.
  3. Make Batter: Gently fold the dry ingredients into the wet ingredients. Mix just until combined; avoid overmixing to keep the fritters light and tender. Set the batter aside.
  4. Heat Oil for Frying: Fill a Dutch oven or large saucepan 2-3 inches deep with vegetable oil. Using a candy thermometer, heat the oil over medium-low heat to maintain a temperature between 350°F and 365°F (177°C to 185°C).
  5. Fry the Fritters: Once the oil reaches the correct temperature, carefully drop scoops of about 3 tablespoons of batter into the hot oil using a large spoon or ice cream scoop. Fry multiple fritters at once, but do not overcrowd the pan. Cook for 3-4 minutes, turning them once during cooking, until they are golden brown and cooked through.
  6. Mix Cinnamon Sugar: While the fritters are frying, combine 2 teaspoons of cinnamon and 2 tablespoons of sugar in a small bowl and set aside for coating.
  7. Drain and Cool: Remove the cooked fritters from the oil with tongs and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil. Let them cool for a few minutes until they are warm but not hot.
  8. Coat Fritters: Roll the slightly cooled fritters in the cinnamon and sugar mixture, coating them evenly. For best flavor and texture, enjoy the apple fritters while they are still warm.

Notes

  • Use fresh, crisp apples for the best texture and flavor.
  • If you prefer, substitute orange juice with an equal amount of milk or omit it altogether.
  • Maintain the oil temperature carefully to avoid greasy or undercooked fritters.
  • Do not overmix the batter; a few lumps are okay for a lighter fritter texture.
  • Serve apple fritters with a dusting of powdered sugar or a drizzle of honey for extra sweetness.
