Description

This Baked New Orleans BBQ Shrimp recipe is a rich and flavorful dish featuring jumbo shell-on shrimp cooked in a spicy, buttery Creole sauce. The shrimp are first simmered in a blend of butter, Creole Cajun seasoning, clam juice, white wine, Worcestershire sauce, lemon, and hot sauce, then baked until tender and juicy. Served with warm crusty French bread, this dish perfectly captures the vibrant essence of New Orleans cuisine in a simple yet indulgent seafood entree.

Ingredients

Shrimp and Sauce

  • 2 lbs shell-on jumbo (or colossal) shrimp, deveined
  • 1 ½ cups (3 sticks) unsalted butter (preferably Kerrygold)
  • 2 tablespoons Creole Cajun seasoning (homemade or store-bought)
  • ½ cup clam juice or fish stock
  • ¼ cup dry white wine (such as sauvignon blanc)
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 small lemon, zested and juiced
  • 1-3 dashes Louisiana-style hot sauce
  • 1 tablespoon fresh minced parsley

Serving

  • Warm crusty French bread, for serving

Instructions

  1. Preheat and Prepare Shrimp: Preheat your oven to 450°F. Rinse the shell-on shrimp thoroughly, then pat them dry with paper towels to remove excess moisture, which helps them cook properly.
  2. Make the Spiced Butter Sauce: In a large skillet or preferably a cast iron pan, melt the unsalted butter over medium-high heat until it’s sizzling. Add the Creole Cajun seasoning, clam juice (or fish stock), dry white wine, Worcestershire sauce, lemon zest and juice, and Louisiana-style hot sauce. Bring this mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat to medium-low and let it simmer. Gently shake the skillet intermittently to help thicken the sauce without stirring. Simmer for about 5-7 minutes until the sauce thickens enough to coat the back of a spoon, then remove from heat.
  3. Arrange Shrimp in Baking Dish: Place the shrimp in a 9×13-inch baking dish in a single layer. Pour the hot spiced butter sauce evenly over the shrimp, ensuring they are well coated.
  4. Bake the Shrimp: Bake the shrimp uncovered in the preheated oven at 450°F for 10 minutes. Stir the shrimp gently, then continue baking for an additional 2-3 minutes until the shrimp turn pink and firm, indicating they are fully cooked.
  5. Serve Immediately: Transfer the shrimp and buttery sauce to a large, deep serving platter. Garnish with freshly minced parsley. Serve hot with warm crusty French bread, perfect for soaking up the flavorful sauce. Enjoy your delicious New Orleans BBQ Shrimp!

Notes

  • Using shell-on shrimp helps keep the shrimp juicy and imparts extra flavor during cooking.
  • Be careful not to overcook the shrimp; they become rubbery when overdone.
  • The Louisiana-style hot sauce can be adjusted to your preferred spice level.
  • If you do not have clam juice or fish stock, a mild seafood broth is a good substitute.
  • Serving with French bread is essential to soak up the delicious spiced butter sauce.
