Description

A comforting Southern classic, Biscuits and Gravy combines fluffy baked biscuits with a rich, creamy sausage gravy made from ground turkey and seasoned with garlic, onion, and black pepper. Perfect for a hearty breakfast or brunch, this recipe yields tender biscuits topped with savory turkey sausage gravy that is luscious and flavorful.

Ingredients

Biscuits

  • 8 Biscuits (canned or homemade)

Gravy

  • 1 pound ground turkey sausage
  • 2 Tablespoons butter
  • ¼ cup all-purpose flour
  • ½ teaspoon kosher salt
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon onion powder
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper
  • 3 cups whole milk

Instructions

  1. Prepare Biscuits: Bake canned or homemade biscuits according to package or recipe directions until golden and fluffy. This will usually take about 10-15 minutes depending on the biscuit type.
  2. Brown Turkey Sausage: Heat a large nonstick skillet over medium heat. Add the ground turkey sausage and cook, breaking it up with a spatula, until browned and cooked through, about 5 minutes.
  3. Drain Grease: Once the turkey is browned, carefully drain off any excess grease from the skillet to reduce fat in the gravy.
  4. Add Butter and Flour Mixture: Return the skillet to medium heat and add butter. Once melted, add the flour, kosher salt, garlic powder, onion powder, and black pepper. Stir continuously to combine and cook the mixture until the flour is absorbed and starts to bubble, about 1 to 2 minutes. This creates a roux to thicken the gravy.
  5. Whisk in Milk: Slowly pour in the whole milk while whisking constantly to prevent lumps. Increase the heat to medium-high and bring the mixture to a boil.
  6. Simmer Gravy: Reduce the heat to low and simmer the gravy, stirring occasionally, until it thickens to your desired consistency, about 5 minutes.
  7. Serve: Split each biscuit in half and ladle the warm sausage gravy generously over the top. Serve immediately for best flavor and texture.

Notes

  • Using ground turkey sausage reduces fat compared to traditional pork sausage but still provides great flavor.
  • If you prefer a thicker gravy, simmer longer and add a little more flour if needed.
  • Homemade biscuits add a special touch but canned biscuits save time and are equally delicious.
  • Season the gravy to taste; you can add extra black pepper or hot sauce for a spicy kick.
  • Leftover gravy can be refrigerated and reheated gently on the stovetop with a splash of milk to loosen.
