Ingredients
Brown Butter Mixture
- 3 tablespoons salted butter
- ½ teaspoon homemade chai spice
Marshmallow Mixture
- ~48 large marshmallows (1 regular 12 oz. bag of large marshmallows)
Cereal
- 6 cups Rice Krispies Cereal
Instructions
- Prepare Pan: Line a 9×9-inch pan with parchment paper to prevent sticking and for easy removal of the treats.
- Brown the Butter: Heat the salted butter in a large pot over medium-high heat, cooking until small brown bits form and a nutty aroma develops. This process enhances the flavor but requires careful attention to avoid burning. Once browned, remove the pot from heat.
- Add Chai Spice: Whisk the homemade chai spice into the browned butter to evenly distribute the warm, spiced flavor.
- Melt Marshmallows: Add marshmallows to the pot with the brown butter and stir continuously to coat them and encourage melting. If marshmallows stop melting, return the pot to low heat and continue stirring until fully melted.
- Combine Cereal: Remove the pot from heat and immediately add the Rice Krispies cereal, stirring until all the cereal is well coated with the marshmallow mixture.
- Press and Set: Transfer the mixture into the prepared pan and use a spatula or lightly greased hands to press the mixture evenly into the pan. Optionally, dust the top with additional chai spice for extra flavor.
- Cool and Serve: Allow the treats to set at room temperature for at least 30 minutes to firm up before slicing into squares and enjoying.
Notes
- Use parchment paper in the pan for easy removal and cleanup.
- Be careful not to burn the butter; remove from heat as soon as brown bits appear.
- If marshmallows are not melting well, gently warm them on low heat while stirring continuously.
- You can make your own chai spice blend using cinnamon, cardamom, ginger, cloves, and black pepper.
- For a twist, try adding mix-ins like chopped nuts or dried fruit.
