This Cheeseburger Pie combines the classic flavors of a cheeseburger into a delicious, flaky puff pastry pie. Ground beef cooked with savory spices and a tangy homemade burger sauce is layered with sharp cheddar cheese and baked between two golden puff pastry crusts. Served with fresh iceberg lettuce, diced red onion, and pickle chips, this comforting dish makes a perfect family-friendly meal or party appetizer. Ready in just about an hour, it’s an easy way to enjoy all the goodness of a cheeseburger with a flaky twist.

Ingredients

Meat Filling

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 small yellow onion, diced
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • Kosher salt, to taste
  • Fresh cracked pepper, to taste
  • 1 tablespoon sweet pickle relish
  • 1 tablespoon ketchup
  • 2 teaspoons Dijon mustard
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 8 ounces shredded sharp cheddar cheese

Pastry

  • 2 puff pastry sheets, thawed
  • 1 beaten egg + 1 teaspoon water (for egg wash)
  • 2 teaspoons sesame seeds

To Serve

  • Easy homemade burger sauce
  • Sliced iceberg lettuce
  • Diced red onion
  • Pickle chips

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Heat your oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit to prepare for baking the pie.
  2. Cook Ground Beef: Heat a large sauté pan over medium-high heat. Add the ground beef along with a couple pinches of salt and pepper, and cook while crumbling with a spatula until fully browned and cooked through.
  3. Add Onions and Spices: Add diced onion, garlic powder, onion powder, and a couple pinches of salt and pepper. Reduce heat to medium and continue cooking for about 3 minutes, stirring occasionally until onions soften.
  4. Stir in Sauces and Relish: Remove the pan from heat. Stir in sweet pickle relish, ketchup, Dijon mustard, Worcestershire sauce, and a couple large pinches of salt and pepper, mixing well to combine.
  5. Prepare Pie Crust: Lightly grease an 11.5 inch deep dish pie pan. Roll out 1 sheet of puff pastry on a lightly floured surface. Press pastry into the pie pan, trimming any excess dough.
  6. Blind Bake Bottom Crust: Prick the bottom crust all over with a fork to prevent puffing. Bake for 10-15 minutes or until the edges just begin to turn golden brown. Pop any air bubbles that appear during baking.
  7. Add Filling: Spread the cooked meat mixture evenly over the partially baked crust. Then sprinkle the shredded sharp cheddar cheese on top of the meat layer.
  8. Top with Second Crust: Roll out the second puff pastry sheet on a floured surface. Place it over the meat and cheese filling, trim the excess leaving about 1/2 inch overhang, then fold and crimp edges to seal the pie tightly.
  9. Apply Egg Wash and Seeds: Brush the pie crust with the beaten egg wash evenly. Sprinkle with sesame seeds for a nutty crunch and appealing golden finish. Cut 4 slits on the top crust to allow steam to escape during baking.
  10. Bake Pie: Bake for 25-30 minutes or until the puff pastry is cooked through and has a dark golden brown color. If edges brown faster than the center, cover edges with a ring of foil and continue baking until fully done.
  11. Rest and Serve: Let the pie cool for 5 minutes before slicing. Serve with easy homemade burger sauce, and garnish with sliced iceberg lettuce, diced red onion, and pickle chips for a complete cheeseburger experience.
  12. Enjoy and Review: Enjoy your comforting cheeseburger pie! If you loved this recipe, please leave a 5-star rating and a review to share your experience.

Notes

  • Make sure puff pastry sheets are fully thawed before rolling out to avoid cracks.
  • To prevent the crust edges from burning, use foil to shield them if they brown too quickly during baking.
  • You can customize the burger sauce to your taste or use your favorite store-bought version.
  • Allow the pie to rest after baking to help the filling set and make slicing easier.
  • Use sharp cheddar cheese for best flavor and melting properties.
