Description

Delightful homemade chocolate covered apples combining crisp Granny Smith apples with rich, smooth melted chocolate and an array of fun toppings, perfect for an easy treat or festive dessert.

Ingredients

Apples

  • 6 large Granny Smith apples
  • 6 bamboo skewers

Chocolate Coating

  • 2 cups chocolate melting wafers (milk, dark, or white chocolate) or about 12 ounces high-quality chocolate bars

Toppings (optional)

  • Mini M&Ms
  • Crushed candy canes
  • Sprinkles
  • Chopped nuts

Instructions

  1. Prepare Apples: Wash the room temperature apples thoroughly and dry them completely. Remove the stems and insert one bamboo skewer into the top of each apple where the stem was, pushing it all the way down to secure.
  2. Melt Chocolate: Melt the chocolate wafers either using a double boiler by placing a heat-proof bowl over gently simmering water, or in the microwave at 50% power for 1 minute, stir, then continue microwaving at 50% power in 30-second intervals, stirring each time, until smooth and fully melted.
  3. Coat Apples: Dip each apple into the melted chocolate, swirling it around to ensure an even coat. Use a spoon or rubber spatula to help cover any spots if needed.
  4. Add Toppings: While the chocolate is still wet, quickly sprinkle your choice of toppings over the apples or roll the apples in them to adhere.
  5. Set Chocolate: Place the coated apples on wax or parchment paper and let them rest at room temperature until the chocolate sets, about 90 minutes.
  6. Store: For best freshness, store the chocolate covered apples in the refrigerator for 3-4 days. They can also be kept at room temperature in a cool, dry spot for up to 24 hours.

Notes

  • Ensure apples are completely dry before dipping to help the chocolate stick better.
  • Use bamboo skewers for sturdy handling and serving.
  • Chocolate melting wafers are designed to melt smoothly without seizing; high-quality chocolate bars can be used but may require gentle stirring and care to avoid burning.
  • Choose a variety of toppings based on your preference for texture and flavor contrast.
  • If chocolate is too thick, gently reheat or add a small amount of vegetable oil or shortening to smooth it out.
  • Room temperature apples prevent condensation that can cause chocolate to slide off.
