Description

Cowboy Butter Sauce is an easy and flavorful dipping sauce featuring melted butter infused with fresh herbs, lemon, garlic, and a touch of heat. Perfect for enhancing the taste of steak, seafood, grilled vegetables, potatoes, or bread, this vibrant sauce can be prepared in just 15 minutes and serves 12.

Ingredients

Butter Base

  • 1 cup butter, melted (2 sticks / 8 ounces)

Fresh Herbs

  • 2 tablespoons fresh parsley, finely minced
  • 2 tablespoons fresh cilantro, finely minced
  • 1 tablespoon green onions, finely minced
  • 1 tablespoon fresh thyme, finely minced

Flavor Enhancers

  • 1 teaspoon lemon zest (zest of 1 medium lemon)
  • 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice (about 1 medium lemon)
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 5 cloves garlic, finely minced
  • 2 tablespoons shallot, finely minced (about 1 medium)
  • 2 tablespoons Dijon mustard
  • ¼ teaspoon smoked paprika
  • ¼ teaspoon red pepper flakes
  • ⅛ teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • ¼ teaspoon kosher salt (or to taste)
  • ¼ teaspoon coarse ground black pepper (or to taste)

Instructions

  1. Melt the Butter: Begin by melting 1 cup of butter (2 sticks) in a saucepan over low heat or in the microwave until fully melted. Pour the melted butter into a medium mixing bowl.
  2. Add Fresh Herbs: Add the minced parsley, cilantro, green onions, and thyme to the melted butter. Stir thoroughly to ensure the herbs are evenly distributed throughout the butter.
  3. Add Citrus and Worcestershire Sauce: Incorporate the lemon zest, fresh lemon juice, and Worcestershire sauce into the herb-butter mixture. Stir to combine all the flavors.
  4. Mix in Aromatics and Spices: Add the finely minced garlic and shallot along with Dijon mustard, smoked paprika, red pepper flakes, and cayenne pepper. Whisk everything together vigorously until the sauce is smooth and well blended.
  5. Season to Taste: Season the sauce with kosher salt and coarse ground black pepper to your preference. You can adjust the lemon juice and heat levels by adding more if desired for a stronger flavor.
  6. Serve Warm: Serve the cowboy butter sauce warm. It pairs wonderfully as a dipping sauce or drizzle over steak, chicken, shrimp, lobster, crab legs, grilled vegetables, potatoes, or fresh bread for an extra burst of flavor.

Notes

  • The sauce is best served warm to maintain its smooth, buttery texture.
  • Adjust the heat by varying amounts of cayenne pepper and red pepper flakes to suit your spice preference.
  • Fresh herbs are key to the vibrant flavor — avoid dried substitutes for best results.
  • Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator and gently reheat before serving.
  • This sauce can also be used as a flavorful spread on sandwiches or burgers.
