Description

French Dip Sliders feature tender roast beef, melted provolone cheese, and caramelized onions nestled inside soft sweet rolls, served with a flavorful au jus for dipping. This crowd-pleasing recipe is perfect for parties or a comforting meal.

Ingredients

Main Ingredients

  • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1 medium onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 teaspoons fresh thyme, minced
  • 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 12 sweet rolls
  • 10 slices provolone cheese
  • 14 ounces sliced deli roast beef

Topping & Sauce

  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 & 1/2 tablespoons dried onion soup mix
  • 1 packet au jus gravy mix
  • 3 cups water
  • Fresh chopped parsley, for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. Caramelize the Onions: In a large skillet over medium heat, melt 3 tablespoons of unsalted butter. Add the thinly sliced onion and stir to coat in the butter. Cook, stirring occasionally, for 12-15 minutes until the onions are soft and browned but not burnt. Add minced thyme, kosher salt, and black pepper, stir to combine, then remove from heat and set aside.
  2. Prepare the Rolls: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Take the 12 sweet rolls out of their package, keeping them intact. Slice the rolls horizontally with a large knife to separate tops and bottoms. Place the bottom halves cut-side up in an 11×7 inch baking dish.
  3. Assemble the Sliders: Layer half of the provolone cheese slices over the bottom rolls, then add the sliced roast beef evenly on top. Spread the caramelized onions over the beef, then layer the remaining provolone slices. Cover with the top halves of the rolls.
  4. Make the Butter Mixture: In a small bowl, combine melted butter (1/2 cup) and dried onion soup mix (1 & 1/2 tablespoons). Brush or pour this mixture evenly over the tops of the rolls.
  5. Bake the Sliders: Loosely cover the baking dish with aluminum foil, ensuring the foil does not touch the rolls. Bake for 25 minutes. Remove the foil and bake an additional 5 minutes to brown the tops of the rolls.
  6. Prepare the Au Jus: While the sliders bake, prepare the au jus gravy by mixing the packet with 3 cups of water according to the package directions.
  7. Serve: Garnish the sliders with fresh chopped parsley if desired. Serve warm with the au jus on the side for dipping. Enjoy your delicious French Dip Sliders!

Notes

  • Use sweet rolls for a soft, slightly sweet contrast to the savory beef and onions.
  • Caramelizing onions slowly gives them a rich, deep flavor that enhances the sandwich.
  • Cover the rolls loosely with foil during baking to prevent the tops from drying out while allowing some browning.
  • Au jus can be made from scratch for a richer flavor, but packet mixes offer convenience.
  • These sliders can be assembled ahead of time and refrigerated before baking for easy entertaining.
