Discover the rich and creamy French Onion Dip that’s better than any store-bought version. Made with homemade caramelized onions, sour cream, and fresh herbs, this dip is perfect for gatherings or a tasty snack. The slow-cooked onions add a deep, sweet flavor that elevates this classic dip to a new level.
Ingredients
Caramelized Onions
- 2 tablespoons butter or olive oil
- 2 medium yellow onions, sliced
- 3 garlic cloves, minced
Dip Base
- 2 cups sour cream
- ¼ cup mayonnaise
- 2 tablespoons finely chopped fresh chives
- 1 tablespoon finely chopped fresh parsley
- Kosher salt, to taste
- Freshly ground black pepper, to taste
- Optional: A splash of Worcestershire sauce for richer flavor
Instructions
- Caramelize the onions: Heat the butter or olive oil in a large sauté pan over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and stir for about 2 minutes to coat them evenly in the fat. Then reduce the heat to low to allow slow caramelization.
- Continue caramelizing: Stir the onions every 2 to 3 minutes, allowing them to brown gently on the bottom before stirring. If they begin to stick or brown too quickly, add a few tablespoons of water to deglaze the pan and keep the onions moist.
- Finish caramelizing: Cook the onions for approximately 45 minutes until deeply caramelized and tender. Add the minced garlic in the last minute of cooking and sauté briefly. Remove from heat once done.
- Chill and chop: Transfer the cooled caramelized onions to a small bowl and refrigerate until fully chilled. Once cold, roughly chop the onions into smaller bite-sized pieces, ensuring the dip will have a great texture without melting the sour cream base.
- Mix the dip: In a mixing bowl, combine the cold caramelized onions with sour cream, mayonnaise, fresh chives, parsley, salt, and pepper. Stir well until all ingredients are fully incorporated and creamy. Add a splash of Worcestershire sauce if desired for an extra depth of flavor.
- Serve: Garnish with additional chopped herbs and serve chilled with chips, crackers, or fresh vegetables.
Notes
- Slow cooking the onions is key to developing their natural sweetness and deep flavor, so be patient during caramelization.
- Make sure the onions are completely cooled before adding to the dip base to prevent thinning or melting the sour cream.
- For a tangier dip, you can replace some or all of the mayonnaise with Greek yogurt.
- The dip pairs wonderfully with potato chips, vegetable sticks, pita chips, or as a spread on sandwiches.
- Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
