Description

This fresh salmon tartare with avocado is a quick, healthy, and elegant appetizer that combines finely chopped high-quality salmon with creamy avocado, tangy capers, and fragrant herbs. Dressed with lemon juice, grainy mustard, and olive oil, it offers a bright and refreshing flavor perfect for serving with toasted baguette, chips, or cucumber slices for a low-carb option. Ready in just 10 minutes, this dish is ideal for entertaining or a light meal.

Ingredients

Salmon Tartare

  • ½ lb salmon (boneless and skinless, finely chopped, preferably sushi-grade)
  • 2 tablespoons shallot (finely chopped)
  • ½ small avocado (finely chopped)
  • 1 tablespoon capers (chopped)
  • 1 tablespoon chives (finely chopped)
  • 1 teaspoon olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon lemon juice
  • 1 tablespoon grainy mustard
  • ¼ teaspoon kosher salt (adjust to taste)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Salmon: Thinly slice the salmon lengthwise into 1/8″-wide sheets. Then cut each sheet into 1/8″-long strips, followed by cutting the strips crosswise into 1/8″ cubes. Place the finely chopped salmon into a medium mixing bowl.
  2. Chop the Remaining Ingredients: Finely chop the avocado to match the salmon cube size. Also chop the shallots, capers, and chives finely and add them into the mixing bowl with the salmon.
  3. Mix the Tartare: Add olive oil, lemon juice, grainy mustard, and kosher salt to the bowl with the salmon and other ingredients. Gently toss everything together to combine well. Taste and adjust the seasoning if needed. Refrigerate until ready to serve.
  4. Serve: When ready to serve, transfer the salmon tartare to a serving bowl or plate. Serve alongside chips or toasted baguette slices. For a low-carb alternative, serve with cucumber slices. Garnish with extra chives and lemon slices for added freshness and presentation. Enjoy immediately.

Notes

  • Use high-quality, sushi-grade salmon to ensure safety and best taste.
  • Keep the tartare chilled until serving to maintain freshness and food safety.
  • Adjust salt and lemon juice to taste for personalized flavor balance.
  • For a citrus twist, try adding a touch of finely grated lemon zest.
  • Serve immediately after assembling for the best texture and flavor.
