Description

A simple and flavorful side dish featuring tender fried cabbage sautéed with onions and garlic, seasoned with a touch of crushed red pepper flakes for a subtle kick. Perfect as a quick, healthy accompaniment to any meal.

Ingredients

Vegetables

  • 1 yellow onion, finely diced
  • 1 small head green cabbage, cored and coarsely chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • Sliced green onions, for garnish (optional)

Seasonings & Oils

  • 2 teaspoons olive oil
  • Salt and fresh ground pepper, to taste
  • ¼ teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes, or to taste

Instructions

  1. Heat oil and sauté onion: In a large nonstick skillet over medium heat, add 2 teaspoons of olive oil. Once heated, add the finely diced yellow onion. Cook for about 2 minutes, stirring occasionally until the onion becomes translucent and fragrant.
  2. Add cabbage and garlic: Stir in the coarsely chopped green cabbage and the minced garlic. Season with salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste, and stir to combine all ingredients evenly.
  3. Cook until tender: Continue cooking the mixture over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until the cabbage softens and becomes just tender, approximately 6 to 8 minutes. Be careful not to overcook to retain some texture.
  4. Garnish and serve: Remove from heat and sprinkle crushed red pepper flakes over the cabbage for a bit of heat. Garnish with sliced green onions if desired. Serve warm as a flavorful side dish.

Notes

  • Use a large nonstick skillet to prevent sticking and to allow for easy stirring.
  • Adjust the crushed red pepper flakes according to your spice preference.
  • For additional flavor, a splash of apple cider vinegar can be added before finishing cooking.
  • This dish pairs wonderfully with grilled meats or as part of a vegetarian meal.
  • Leftovers can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days and reheated gently.
