Description

A flavorful and quick General Tso Shrimp recipe featuring a tangy, sweet, and slightly spicy sauce tossed with tender shrimp. Ready in just 10 minutes, this dish makes a perfect weeknight dinner served alongside steamed rice and broccoli.

Ingredients

Shrimp and Sauce

  • 1 pound raw shrimp (peeled, deveined and tails removed)
  • 1/3 cup chicken or vegetable broth (or substitute water)
  • 2 tablespoons Tamari (or soy sauce if not gluten-free)
  • 2 tablespoons rice vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon hoisin sauce
  • 1 tablespoon coconut sugar (or brown sugar)
  • 1/2 teaspoon minced garlic
  • 1/2 teaspoon minced ginger
  • Pinch red pepper flakes
  • Scant 1 tablespoon arrowroot powder (or cornstarch)
  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil

Garnish

  • Chopped scallions
  • Sesame seeds

Instructions

  1. Prepare the sauce: In a small bowl, whisk together the chicken or vegetable broth, Tamari, rice vinegar, hoisin sauce, coconut sugar, minced garlic, minced ginger, red pepper flakes, and arrowroot powder until smooth and combined.
  2. Cook the shrimp: Heat the sesame oil in a large skillet over medium heat until hot. Add the shrimp and cook for about 1 minute on each side, until they start turning pink.
  3. Add the sauce and finish cooking: Stir the sauce once more, then pour it over the shrimp in the skillet. Stir to coat the shrimp evenly with the sauce. Cook for an additional 1 to 2 minutes until the sauce thickens and the shrimp are fully cooked through.
  4. Garnish and serve: Remove from heat and sprinkle chopped scallions and sesame seeds over the shrimp. Serve immediately with cooked white rice and steamed broccoli for a complete meal.

Notes

  • For a gluten-free version, use Tamari instead of regular soy sauce.
  • Arrowroot powder is used to thicken the sauce; cornstarch can be a substitute if needed.
  • If you prefer less spice, reduce or omit the red pepper flakes.
  • Make sure not to overcook the shrimp to keep them tender and juicy.
  • Serve with steamed vegetables and rice for a balanced meal.
