Description

These Rapid Rise Skillet Rolls are soft, fluffy, and quick to make, perfect for a warm homemade bread option in under an hour. Made with a combination of instant dry yeast, honey, melted butter, and all-purpose flour, these rolls rise swiftly in a cast iron skillet before baking to a golden perfection. Ideal as a side for dinner or enjoyed fresh with butter, these rolls bring comforting bakery freshness to your table fast.

Ingredients

Yeast Mixture

  • 1 tablespoon instant dry yeast
  • 1 cup warm water (100-110°F)
  • 1/4 cup honey

Dough

  • 1/4 cup butter (melted)
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 1/2 to 3 cups all-purpose flour

Optional Topping

  • 1 tablespoon melted butter (for brushing after baking)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven: Set your oven to 400°F (200°C) to ensure it reaches the right temperature while the dough is rising.
  2. Combine wet ingredients with yeast and salt: In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the instant dry yeast, warm water, and honey until smooth. Add melted butter, salt, and the egg. Stir thoroughly until all ingredients are well combined.
  3. Add flour to form dough: Gradually incorporate 2 1/2 to 3 cups of all-purpose flour into the wet mixture, adding about one cup at a time. Stir well after each addition until the dough forms a soft ball and begins to pull away from the sides of the bowl. The dough should be soft yet not sticky.
  4. Divide dough and let rise: Shape the dough into 12 equal-sized pieces, forming each into a ball. Arrange them evenly spaced inside a 12-inch cast iron skillet. Cover the skillet with a clean kitchen towel and let the rolls rise in a warm spot for approximately 20 minutes until they double in size.
  5. Bake the rolls: Place the skillet in the preheated oven and bake for 20-25 minutes until the tops of the rolls turn a golden brown color.
  6. Brush with butter (optional): Once out of the oven, brush the tops of the warm rolls with an additional tablespoon of melted butter to add extra flavor and a glossy finish.

Notes

  • Use warm water between 100-110°F to activate the yeast properly without killing it.
  • If you do not have a cast iron skillet, use any oven-safe round baking dish of similar size.
  • Ensure the dough is soft but not sticky; if too sticky, add a little more flour gradually.
  • For fluffier rolls, avoid over-kneading; gentle mixing until combined is sufficient for this quick rise recipe.
  • Butter brushing after baking adds richness but can be omitted if preferred.
