Description

A deliciously indulgent Sloppy Joe Garlic Cheese Bread that combines the classic, savory ground beef sloppy joe mixture with buttery, garlicky toasted Italian bread, topped with melted sharp cheddar and mozzarella cheese. Perfect for a comforting meal or party appetizer, this recipe brings bold flavors together with a cheesy, crispy finish.

Ingredients

For the Garlic Butter Bread:

  • 1 (14 ounce) loaf Italian bread
  • 8 tablespoons softened butter
  • 1/3 cup fresh parsley
  • 4 cloves garlic
  • Kosher salt, to taste

For the Sloppy Joe Filling:

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 cup petite diced yellow onion
  • 3/4 cup petite diced green bell pepper
  • 3 cloves garlic, finely minced
  • 1 tablespoon tomato paste
  • 1 pound ground beef (85/15)
  • 8 ounce can tomato sauce
  • 1/2 cup ketchup
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon yellow mustard
  • Kosher salt, to taste
  • Fresh cracked black pepper, to taste

For Topping:

  • 6 ounces shredded cheese (sharp cheddar + mozzarella blend)
  • Fresh parsley, for garnish

Instructions

  1. Prepare Oven and Bread: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Slice the Italian bread loaf in half lengthwise to create two equal halves, placing them cut-side up on a baking sheet.
  2. Make Garlic Butter: In a food processor, combine softened butter, fresh parsley, garlic cloves, and a couple pinches of kosher salt. Process until well combined and smooth, creating a flavorful garlic butter spread.
  3. Toast Garlic Bread: Spread the garlic butter evenly across the cut sides of both bread halves. Bake in the preheated oven for 10-12 minutes, or until the edges are toasty and golden brown.
  4. Sauté Vegetables: While the bread bakes, heat olive oil in a large sauté pan over medium-high heat. Add diced onion and green bell pepper with a couple pinches of salt and freshly cracked black pepper. Cook, stirring occasionally, for about 5 minutes until vegetables soften.
  5. Add Garlic and Tomato Paste: Stir in the minced garlic and tomato paste. Cook for about 30 seconds, stirring constantly, to release the flavors.
  6. Cook Ground Beef: Add the ground beef to the pan with a couple pinches of salt and pepper. Cook while crumbling the meat with a spatula until it is browned and fully cooked through.
  7. Simmer Sloppy Joe Sauce: Stir in tomato sauce, ketchup, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, yellow mustard, and additional salt and pepper to taste. Gently simmer over medium to medium-low heat for 8-10 minutes, allowing the mixture to thicken slightly.
  8. Assemble and Broil: Spoon the sloppy joe meat mixture evenly over the toasted garlic bread halves. Top with shredded sharp cheddar and mozzarella cheese. Place under the broiler for 2-3 minutes, or until the cheese melts and starts to turn golden brown.
  9. Garnish and Serve: Remove from the oven and garnish with fresh parsley. Slice into portions and enjoy immediately.
  10. Enjoy and Share: If you loved this recipe, please leave a 5-star rating and review to share your experience!

Notes

  • For a spicier kick, add a pinch of red pepper flakes to the sloppy joe mixture.
  • You can substitute Italian bread with French bread or a sturdy baguette for similar results.
  • Use freshly shredded cheese for the best melting texture and flavor.
  • Leftovers can be reheated in the oven to maintain crispiness.
  • For a lower-fat option, use lean ground beef or ground turkey.
