Description

Southern Hamburger Steaks with Onion Gravy is a comforting and flavorful classic dish featuring seasoned ground beef patties seared to a perfect brown, then simmered in a rich, savory onion gravy. This hearty meal is perfect served over mashed potatoes with green peas or corn, offering a nostalgic taste of Southern home cooking.

Ingredients

Hamburger Steaks

  • 2 lbs ground beef (85/15)
  • ¼ cup chopped scallions, plus more for garnish
  • 1 tablespoon Cajun seasoning, plus more for gravy as desired
  • 1 packet Sazon seasoning (about 1 ½ teaspoons)
  • 1 tablespoon garlic paste
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon maple syrup (or honey)
  • 1 teaspoon dried minced onion
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil (or avocado oil)

Onion Gravy

  • 1 medium yellow onion, roughly chopped
  • 1 Beefy Onion soup packet
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth

Instructions

  1. Assemble the hamburger mixture: In a large bowl, combine ground beef, chopped scallions, Cajun seasoning, Sazon seasoning, garlic paste, Worcestershire sauce, maple syrup or honey, and dried minced onion. Use your hands to mix gently until just combined to avoid overworking the meat and making tough patties.
  2. Marinate beef: Cover the bowl with a lid or plastic wrap and place in the refrigerator for at least 1 hour or up to 24 hours to allow flavors to meld.
  3. Shape the patties: Use a large spring-loaded scoop or your hands to portion and form about 12-13 patties. Flatten each patty gently in your palm for smooth, even shapes.
  4. Brown the steaks: Heat olive or avocado oil in a large, deep skillet or braiser over medium heat. Add a few patties without overcrowding and cook until a deep brown sear forms on the first side, about 3-4 minutes. Flip and brown the other side for 2-3 minutes. Transfer to a clean plate and repeat with remaining patties.
  5. Build the onion gravy: In the same pan, sauté the chopped onion until tender and golden, about 5-6 minutes, scraping the bottom to loosen browned bits. Stir in the Beefy Onion soup packet and flour, cooking for about 1 minute until combined and slightly dissolved.
  6. Add beef broth and thicken: Pour in the beef broth and continue scraping the pan bottom to incorporate all flavors. Bring the mixture to a boil; it should thicken into a rich gravy. Taste and adjust seasoning with additional Cajun seasoning if desired.
  7. Finish steaks & onion gravy: Reduce heat to medium-low and return the browned hamburger steaks to the pan, gently tossing to coat with gravy. Simmer for 5-7 minutes to meld flavors, then remove from heat. Garnish with extra chopped scallions.
  8. Serve: Plate the hamburger steaks with onion gravy over mashed potatoes and cooked green peas or corn for a hearty, homestyle meal. Enjoy!

Notes

  • You can substitute maple syrup with honey for a slightly different sweetness.
  • Marinating the patties for longer intensifies the flavor but is optional if short on time.
  • If you do not have a Beefy Onion soup packet, you can use onion soup mix or substitute with additional beef broth and sautéed onions.
  • Using a spring-loaded scoop makes patty shaping easier and more uniform.
  • For a gluten-free version, substitute all-purpose flour with a GF flour blend or cornstarch in the gravy.
