Description

A delicious and healthy Teriyaki Tofu recipe featuring crispy pan-fried tofu triangles coated in a sticky, homemade teriyaki sauce, served with white rice and your choice of steamed vegetables. This plant-based dish is perfect for a flavorful vegan meal that is simple to prepare at home.

Ingredients

Tofu

  • 1 block extra firm tofu
  • Olive oil spray or enough olive oil to coat the skillet
  • 1-2 tablespoons corn starch

Teriyaki Sauce

  • 1 batch homemade teriyaki sauce (see linked recipe)

Accompaniments

  • White rice, cooked
  • Broccoli or other vegetable of choice, steamed or cooked
  • White sesame seeds, for garnish
  • Sliced green onions, for garnish

Instructions

  1. Drain and press tofu: Remove the tofu from its packaging and drain excess water. Press the tofu for 30 minutes to remove additional moisture. If you don’t have a tofu press, wrap the tofu block in a clean dish towel and place something heavy on top to help press out the water.
  2. Cut tofu into triangles: After pressing, cut the tofu block into triangle-shaped pieces to increase surface area for crispiness and presentation.
  3. Coat tofu with corn starch: Place the tofu triangles in a bowl and toss gently with 1 to 2 tablespoons of corn starch until each piece is evenly coated. This helps to create a crispy exterior when fried.
  4. Pan-fry tofu: Heat a skillet over medium heat and spray or coat with enough olive oil to cover the surface. Fry the tofu pieces for about 20 minutes, turning and stirring often to ensure they are golden brown and crispy on all sides.
  5. Prepare teriyaki sauce: While the tofu is frying, prepare the homemade teriyaki sauce as per the linked recipe in the article.
  6. Combine tofu and sauce: Add the cooked tofu back into the skillet with the teriyaki sauce. Cook over medium-high heat for about 5 minutes, stirring gently until the tofu is fully coated, the sauce is sticky, and bubbling.
  7. Serve: Plate the teriyaki tofu alongside cooked white rice and your chosen vegetable such as steamed broccoli.
  8. Garnish: Sprinkle white sesame seeds and sliced green onions on top for an added burst of flavor and visual appeal.

Notes

  • Pressing tofu is essential for achieving a crispy texture by removing excess moisture.
  • Use extra firm tofu for the best texture and frying results.
  • Adjust the amount of corn starch based on how much tofu you use to ensure even coating.
  • The homemade teriyaki sauce can be prepared ahead of time and stored in the refrigerator.
  • For a gluten-free option, ensure that tamari or gluten-free soy sauce is used in the teriyaki sauce.
  • Feel free to swap white rice for brown rice or cauliflower rice for a healthier variant.
  • Vegetables can be steamed, roasted, or stir-fried as preferred.
