Description

Texas Toast Sloppy Joes combine a classic sloppy joe beef mixture with thick, crispy Texas toast, topped with melted shredded cheese for a deliciously hearty and satisfying sandwich that’s perfect for a quick weeknight meal.

Ingredients

Sloppy Joe Mixture

  • 1 small Onion, finely chopped
  • 1 green Bell Pepper, finely chopped
  • 1 lb Ground Beef
  • 1 cup Tomato Sauce
  • 1/2 cup Ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 tablespoons Brown Sugar
  • 1 teaspoon Mustard
  • 1 teaspoon Garlic Powder
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 1 tablespoon Olive Oil

Assembly

  • 8 slices Texas Toast
  • Shredded Cheese (for topping), about 1 cup

Instructions

  1. Prep the Sloppy Joe Mixture: Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the chopped onions and green bell pepper and sauté until they soften, about 3-5 minutes. Add the ground beef and cook until browned and crumbly, breaking it apart with a spoon, about 5-7 minutes. Drain any excess fat.
  2. Make the Sauce: Stir in the tomato sauce, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, mustard, and garlic powder. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Reduce heat to low and simmer for about 5 minutes, stirring occasionally until the mixture thickens slightly.
  3. Prepare the Texas Toast: While the sloppy joe mixture simmers, bake the Texas toast according to the package instructions until golden and crispy.
  4. Assemble the Sloppy Joes: Use a spoon to press a well into each slice of Texas toast. Spoon a generous amount of the sloppy joe mixture into each well. Top with shredded cheese and bake for an additional 2-3 minutes until the cheese is melted and bubbly.

Notes

  • For extra flavor, try adding a dash of smoked paprika or chili powder to the beef mixture.
  • Use ground turkey or chicken for a leaner option.
  • Feel free to use your favorite cheese such as cheddar, mozzarella, or pepper jack.
  • Serve with pickles or coleslaw for added texture and flavor contrast.
  • Leftovers can be refrigerated for up to 3 days and reheated in the oven or microwave.
