Ingredients
Dumpling Filling
- 1 Pound Ground beef
- 1 Cup Napa Cabbage (chopped)
- 3 Green Onions (finely sliced)
- 1 Tablespoon Fresh Ginger (minced)
- 2 Cloves Garlic (mashed)
- 6 Mushrooms (finely chopped)
- ½ Teaspoon Baking Soda (optional but recommended for fluffier texture)
- 2 Tablespoons Sesame Oil
- 2 Tablespoons Mirin (or Shaoxing wine)
- 2 Tablespoons Oyster Sauce
- ¼ Cup Low Sodium Soy Sauce
Assembly & Garnish
- 1 Package Wonton Wrappers
- Green Onions (for garnish)
- Chili Oil (for garnish)
Instructions
- Prepare the dumpling filling: In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, chopped napa cabbage, sliced green onions, minced ginger, mashed garlic, finely chopped mushrooms, baking soda if using, sesame oil, mirin, oyster sauce, and low sodium soy sauce. Mix thoroughly using your hands or a fork until the ingredients are well incorporated.
- Layer the dumplings: Set up ramekins or mugs. Begin layering by spooning a portion of the beef mixture into the bottom, then placing a wonton wrapper on top. Alternate layers of filling and wonton wrappers, pressing gently with each layer until the ramekin is nearly full.
- Add water and seal: Before the final layer, pour about ⅓ cup of water into each ramekin to create steam during cooking. Top with two wonton wrappers to seal the filling inside.
- Steam the dumpling lasagna: Place the ramekins into a Dutch oven or large pot filled with water halfway up the sides of the ramekins. Cover with a lid and steam for approximately 20 minutes until the beef is fully cooked and the wonton wrappers have softened and become tender.
- Garnish and serve: Carefully remove the ramekins from the steamer. Finish by drizzling chili oil on top and garnishing with freshly sliced green onions. Serve warm directly from the ramekin for an individual comforting meal.
Notes
- Using baking soda in the filling helps create a fluffier texture in the meat.
- Mirin can be substituted with Shaoxing wine for a slightly different flavor profile.
- If you don’t have ramekins, use small oven-safe bowls or mugs suitable for steaming.
- Keep water in the steamer pot at a gentle simmer to avoid burning or drying out the dumplings.
- Adjust chili oil quantity to your preferred spice level or replace with a mild sesame oil for a gentler taste.
