Description

This Brown Sugar Toast recipe is a quick and delicious sweet breakfast or snack option featuring soft bread caramelized in a rich butter and dark brown sugar mixture. Using Japanese milk bread or alternatives like Texas toast or brioche creates a tender, slightly sweet toasted treat with a crunchy caramelized crust.

Ingredients

Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon salted butter (softened)
  • 1 tablespoon dark brown sugar
  • 1 slice shokupan (Japanese milk bread), or Texas toast or brioche

Instructions

  1. Prepare the butter mixture: In a small bowl, combine the softened salted butter and dark brown sugar, mixing until the two ingredients are creamy and fully incorporated.
  2. Apply butter mixture to bread: Spread half of the butter and sugar mixture evenly over one side of the slice of bread. Then place the bread, buttered side down, into a nonstick skillet. Spread the remaining butter and sugar evenly on the now top side of the bread.
  3. Cook the first side: Heat the skillet over medium heat and cook the bread for about 3 minutes, or until the underside becomes dark brown and caramelized. Lower the heat as necessary to avoid burning the sugar and butter.
  4. Flip and cook the other side: Carefully flip the bread and cook the other side for an additional 3 minutes, allowing it to caramelize and crisp to a golden brown.
  5. Cool and serve: Remove the toast from the skillet and place it on a wire rack to cool slightly. During this rest time, the toast will crisp up further, creating a delightful texture contrast between the soft bread interior and crunchy caramelized exterior.

Notes

  • Use softened butter for easier mixing and spreading.
  • Adjust the heat carefully to prevent burning the sugar mixture.
  • You can substitute shokupan with Texas toast or brioche for similar texture and flavor.
  • Serve warm for best taste and texture.
  • Cooling on a wire rack ensures crispiness by preventing sogginess from steam.
