Ingredients
Caramel Sauce
- Caramel squares, unwrapped – quantity as needed (typically about 10-12 squares)
- ½ cup heavy cream
Brownie Batter
- 2 eggs
- 1 cup brown sugar
- ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
- ½ cup butter, melted
- ½ cup all-purpose flour
- ½ cup cocoa powder
- ¼ teaspoon salt
- ½ cup chocolate chips
Instructions
- Preheat and prepare pan: Preheat your oven to 350º F (175º C). Grease an 8×8-inch baking pan or line it with parchment paper to prevent sticking and for easy removal of the brownies.
- Melt caramel sauce: Place the unwrapped caramel squares and ½ cup heavy cream in a heavy-bottomed saucepan. Heat on low, stirring occasionally, until the caramels fully melt and combine with the cream to form a smooth sauce. Alternatively, melt them in a microwave-safe bowl in 15-second intervals, stirring between, until smooth. Set aside to cool slightly.
- Mix eggs and sugar: In a large mixing bowl, whisk together 2 eggs, 1 cup brown sugar, and ½ teaspoon vanilla extract until the mixture is well combined and slightly frothy.
- Add melted butter: Gradually whisk the ½ cup melted butter into the egg mixture until smooth and cohesive.
- Add dry ingredients: Sift in ½ cup all-purpose flour, ½ cup cocoa powder, and ¼ teaspoon salt. Whisk gently until fully incorporated and the batter is smooth, taking care not to overmix.
- Fold in chocolate chips: Using a spatula, fold ½ cup chocolate chips into the batter evenly.
- Prepare batter in pan: Spread the brownie batter evenly into the prepared 8×8-inch pan, smoothing the top with a spatula.
- Add caramel swirl: Pour the melted caramel and cream mixture over the brownie batter. Use a butter knife to swirl the caramel into the batter, creating a marbled effect.
- Bake: Bake the brownies in the center of the preheated oven for 25 minutes. The top should be set but a toothpick inserted near the center may come out with a few moist crumbs.
- Cool and serve: Remove the pan from the oven and let the brownies cool completely in the pan. Optionally, drizzle additional caramel sauce on top before cutting into 9 squares and serving.
Notes
- For best results, use high-quality caramel squares for a richer topping.
- Ensure the caramel sauce is not too hot before swirling to avoid sinking too deeply into the batter.
- You can substitute half the butter with oil for a softer brownie texture.
- Feel free to add nuts like walnuts or pecans to the batter for extra crunch.
- Brownies can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days or refrigerated for up to a week.
