Description

This Cherry Coffee Syrup is a delightful homemade syrup made by simmering fresh cherries with sugar, water, and a touch of vanilla. Perfect for enhancing your coffee, desserts, or cocktails with a natural cherry flavor and a hint of sweetness.

Ingredients

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups pitted and halved cherries (225g)
  • 1/2 cup sugar (cane sugar preferred, 100g)
  • 1 cup water (240mL)
  • Pinch of sea salt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (5mL)

Instructions

  1. Combine ingredients: Add the pitted and halved cherries, sugar, water, and a pinch of sea salt into a pot. Stir gently to mix the ingredients evenly.
  2. Simmer: Bring the mixture to a boil over medium heat, then reduce the heat to maintain a simmer. Allow it to simmer uncovered for 30 minutes, stirring occasionally to prevent sticking.
  3. Crush cherries and add vanilla: Remove the pot from heat. Using a spoon or masher, crush the cherries inside the pot to release more flavor. Then add the vanilla extract and stir well to combine.
  4. Strain and store: Press the mixture through a fine sieve to separate the syrup from the jam-like cherry solids. Store the strained syrup in a clean jar for use, and keep the leftover cherry solids separately to enjoy as a topping or snack.

Notes

  • Use ripe, fresh cherries for the best flavor. Frozen cherries can also be used but may alter consistency slightly.
  • The jammy cherries left after straining can be used on top of yogurt, pancakes, or desserts.
  • Store the syrup in the refrigerator and use within 2 weeks for optimal freshness.
  • You can adjust sugar quantity based on desired sweetness.
  • This syrup can be added to coffee, cocktails, or drizzled over ice cream for a cherry-flavored twist.
