Description

This Chicken Cheesesteak recipe is a delicious twist on the classic Philly cheesesteak, featuring tender sautéed chicken breast, caramelized onions, and green bell peppers topped with melted provolone cheese and served on toasted hoagie rolls. It’s quick, flavorful, and perfect for a satisfying meal.

Ingredients

Bread and Butter

  • 4 hoagie rolls
  • 5 tablespoons unsalted butter ( stick), divided

Vegetables

  • 1 onion, sliced
  • 2 green bell peppers, sliced

Chicken and Seasonings

  • pounds boneless, skinless chicken breast (about 4 breasts), sliced into thin pieces
  • 1¼ teaspoons kosher salt, divided
  • ¼ teaspoon ground black pepper

Cheese

  • 8 slices provolone cheese

Condiment (Optional)

  • ⅓ cup mayonnaise
  • ½ clove garlic, minced

Instructions

  1. Toast the Rolls: Spread 3 tablespoons of butter on the inside of the hoagie rolls. Place them flat-side down in a skillet over medium heat and toast until golden brown and slightly crisp. Remove and set aside.
  2. Sauté Vegetables: Heat 1 tablespoon of butter in a large skillet or griddle over medium-high heat. Add the sliced onion and green bell pepper, season with ¼ teaspoon kosher salt, and sauté for 10 to 12 minutes until the vegetables are softened and caramelized. Transfer the vegetables to a plate.
  3. Cook the Chicken: Add another tablespoon of butter to the skillet. Season the thinly sliced chicken breast with 1 teaspoon kosher salt and ¼ teaspoon black pepper. Spread the chicken out evenly in the pan. Cook for about 2-3 minutes on one side until the edges are browned, then flip and cook another 2-3 minutes until fully cooked and browned.
  4. Combine Ingredients: Stir the sautéed onions and peppers back into the chicken in the skillet. Mix well and divide the mixture into 4 equal portions.
  5. Top with Cheese: Remove the skillet from the heat and place 2 slices of provolone cheese on each portion. Let the residual heat melt the cheese slightly.
  6. Make Garlic Mayo (Optional): In a small bowl, combine the mayonnaise and minced garlic. Spread an even layer of this garlic mayo inside each toasted hoagie roll.
  7. Assemble the Sandwiches: Using a spatula, transfer each cheesy chicken portion onto the bottom half of a hoagie roll. Top with the other half of the roll and serve immediately.

Notes

  • For a spicier version, consider adding sliced jalapeños or a dash of hot sauce to the chicken mixture.
  • You can substitute provolone with American or mozzarella cheese according to your preference.
  • Using thinly sliced chicken helps it cook quickly and evenly.
  • Make sure to not overcrowd the pan when cooking the chicken to get a nice sear.
  • The garlic mayonnaise spread is optional but adds great flavor and moisture.
