Description

Delicious homemade chocolate chip donuts baked to perfection with a tender crumb and topped with a smooth vanilla glaze. These donuts are easy to make, using simple ingredients like sour cream and brown sugar for a rich, moist texture. Perfect for a sweet breakfast treat or dessert, these baked donuts come together quickly and satisfy any chocolate lover’s cravings.

Ingredients

For Chocolate Chip Donuts

  • 1 cup (120 grams) all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup (107 grams) light brown sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 cup (114 grams) full-fat sour cream
  • 2 1/2 tablespoons (35 grams) unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 cup (170 grams) chocolate, chopped or chocolate chips

For Vanilla Glaze

  • 1/2 cup (57 grams) powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 tablespoons heavy cream or milk (adjust as needed)

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven and Prepare Mold: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Lightly spray your donut mold with non-stick spray to ensure easy removal of the donuts.
  2. Mix Dry Ingredients: In a medium-sized bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, light brown sugar, salt, and baking powder to combine evenly.
  3. Combine Wet Ingredients: In a separate bowl, mix the sour cream, melted butter (cooled), and egg. Make sure the butter is not hot to avoid curdling the sour cream or cooking the egg prematurely.
  4. Combine Wet and Dry Mixtures: Gently fold the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients until just combined. The batter will be thicker than expected; avoid overmixing to prevent tough donuts.
  5. Add Chocolate Chips: Fold the chocolate chips into the batter evenly.
  6. Fill Donut Mold: Spoon or pipe the batter into the prepared donut molds, filling each cavity to the top. If using a silicone mold, place it on a cookie sheet for stability when transferring to the oven.
  7. Bake Donuts: Bake in the preheated oven for 15-17 minutes. Start checking around 10 minutes to see if the pan requires turning. Donuts are done when they spring back to a light press.
  8. Cool Donuts: Remove the donuts from the oven and allow them to cool in the pan for 10 minutes before removing to a cooling rack to cool completely.
  9. Prepare Vanilla Glaze: In a small bowl, whisk together powdered sugar, vanilla extract, and heavy cream or milk until smooth and lump-free. Add more milk if the glaze is too thick to your desired consistency.
  10. Glaze Donuts: Dip the tops of the cooled donuts into the vanilla glaze, allowing excess to drip off. Let the glaze set before serving.

Notes

  • Make sure the melted butter is cooled before mixing with sour cream and egg to prevent curdling.
  • Do not overmix the batter; it should be thick but not tough.
  • Use a silicone mold on a baking tray for easier handling.
  • Check donuts early during baking to avoid overcooking and dryness.
  • Adjust glaze thickness with milk or cream as needed for dipping.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days.
