Description
Decadent and irresistibly chocolaty Chocolate Rice Krispie Treats, featuring a rich blend of cocoa, chocolate malted milk powder, and semi-sweet chocolate chips combined with crispy Cocoa Krispies. These treats are perfectly gooey, subtly salted, and ideal for dessert or snacking.
Ingredients
Wet Ingredients
- 1 ½ cups salted butter
- ½ cup sweetened condensed milk
Dry Ingredients
- ¼ cup cocoa powder
- ½ cup chocolate malted milk powder (divided)
- 1 teaspoon kosher salt
- 16 oz mini marshmallows (divided)
- 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
- 8 cups Cocoa Krispies
Topping
- Flaky sea salt (optional)
Instructions
- Prepare the Pan: Grease and line a 9×13 inch casserole dish with parchment paper. This ensures easy removal of the treats and prevents sticking, making slicing simpler.
- Melt the Butter: In a large saucepan over medium heat, melt the salted butter, stirring occasionally. Continue cooking until golden brown flecks appear, about 5 minutes, to develop a rich, nutty flavor.
- Add Cocoa Mixture: Stir in the cocoa powder, half of the chocolate malted milk powder, kosher salt, and sweetened condensed milk. Bring the mixture to a boil and let it bubble gently for one minute while stirring constantly to fully combine and activate flavors.
- Melt Marshmallows and Chocolate Chips: Add 10 ounces of mini marshmallows to the pan and stir until completely melted. Then add the semi-sweet chocolate chips along with the remaining chocolate malted milk powder, stirring until the chocolate chips partially melt. Remove from heat immediately.
- Combine Remaining Ingredients: Add the remaining mini marshmallows and gently toss to coat evenly in the chocolate mixture. Next, add the Cocoa Krispies and fold until fully coated with the chocolate mixture for an even distribution of flavor and texture.
- Shape the Treats: Transfer the mixture to the prepared casserole dish. Using a gentle pulling and pushing motion, spread the treats evenly to the edges of the pan without pressing down too hard, preserving the light and airy texture. Optionally, sprinkle the top with flaky sea salt to enhance the chocolate notes.
- Set and Serve: Cover the dish and allow the treats to set at room temperature for one hour. Once firm, slice into 24 squares and serve.
Notes
- For best results, use fresh Cocoa Krispies cereal to maintain crispness.
- Do not press the mixture firmly into the pan to keep treats light and chewy.
- Flaky sea salt topping enhances the sweetness and balances the richness, but can be omitted if preferred.
- Store treats in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days to maintain freshness.
- For a nut-free version, ensure all ingredients and powder are free from cross-contamination.
