Description

This smooth and creamy Coffee Buttercream frosting combines the rich flavors of espresso with a classic buttery sweetness. Perfect for frosting cupcakes, cakes, or cookies, this easy-to-make buttercream brings a luxurious coffee twist to your desserts.

Ingredients

Buttercream Ingredients

  • 2 sticks unsalted butter (room temperature)
  • 3 cups confectioners’ sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ¼ teaspoon kosher salt
  • 3 teaspoons instant espresso powder
  • ¼ cup heavy cream

Instructions

  1. Combine Butter and Sugar: In a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, or in a large bowl using a hand mixer, beat the unsalted butter and confectioners’ sugar together on low speed until they are well combined to avoid sugar flying out.
  2. Increase Mixer Speed: Increase the mixer speed to medium-high and beat for 2 minutes. This process aerates the mixture and makes the buttercream thick and fluffy.
  3. Add Flavorings: Stop the mixer and add the kosher salt, vanilla extract, and instant espresso powder into the bowl. Beat again on medium-high speed for another 2 minutes to fully incorporate the coffee flavor evenly throughout the frosting.
  4. Incorporate Heavy Cream: Lower the mixer speed to the lowest setting and slowly pour in the heavy cream. Continue beating until the mixture becomes very creamy and spreadable, achieving the perfect consistency for frosting.
  5. Frost Your Dessert: Use the coffee buttercream immediately to frost cooled cupcakes or cakes. Ensure the cake is completely cooled to prevent melting the frosting.

Notes

  • Make sure the butter is at room temperature for easy mixing and a smooth texture.
  • Adjust the espresso powder amount to taste for a stronger or milder coffee flavor.
  • If the buttercream is too thick, add a bit more heavy cream, 1 tablespoon at a time.
  • For a firmer frosting, refrigerate briefly before spreading, but allow it to soften slightly before serving.
  • This frosting can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days. Re-whip before use.
