Ingredients
Dry Ingredients
- 9 cups Chex Cereal
- 2 ½ cups Powdered Sugar
- 1 cup Red and Blue M&M candies
Wet Ingredients
- 1 cup Semi Sweet Chocolate Chips
- ½ cup Smooth Peanut Butter
- ¼ cup Unsalted Butter
- 1 teaspoon Vanilla Extract
Instructions
- Melt the Chocolate Mixture: In a microwave-safe bowl, combine chocolate chips, peanut butter, and butter. Microwave for 30 seconds, then stir thoroughly.
- Finish Melting: Microwave the mixture for another 30 seconds and stir again. If the mixture isn’t fully melted, continue microwaving in 15-second increments, stirring between each, until the mixture is smooth. Remove from microwave and stir in vanilla extract.
- Coat the Cereal: Pour the melted chocolate mixture over the Chex cereal and gently toss to ensure every piece is coated evenly.
- Prepare the Powdered Sugar Coating: Divide the powdered sugar evenly between two gallon-sized storage bags.
- Coat with Powdered Sugar: Scoop the chocolate-coated cereal into the bags with powdered sugar. Seal each bag and shake well to coat the cereal thoroughly.
- Set the Puppy Chow: Spread the coated cereal evenly on a parchment-lined baking sheet and let it set for about 30 minutes to allow the coating to firm up.
- Add M&M Candies: Just before serving, add the red and blue M&M candies to the coated cereal and toss gently to combine.
Notes
- Use smooth peanut butter for the best coating texture.
- Ensure the chocolate mixture is completely melted and smooth before coating the cereal.
- Letting the puppy chow set on parchment paper helps prevent sticking and allows the coating to harden nicely.
- You can store puppy chow in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days.
- For a nut-free version, substitute the peanut butter with sunflower seed butter or omit it entirely.
- Add festive sprinkles or other colored candies for extra decoration during the holidays.
