Ingredients
Casserole
- ¼ cup unsalted butter (room temperature)
- ½ cup light brown sugar (packed)
- 1 loaf french or brioche bread (about 8-10 cups, cut or torn into cubes)
- 4 large eggs
- 2½ cups eggnog
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 2 teaspoons cinnamon
- 1 teaspoon nutmeg
Bourbon Syrup
- 1 cup maple syrup
- 1-2 oz bourbon
Instructions
- Prepare the Pan: Spread the room temperature unsalted butter evenly over the bottom and sides of a 9×13 inch baking pan. Then sprinkle the packed light brown sugar evenly over the bottom to create a caramelized base.
- Add Bread Cubes: Place all the cubed french or brioche bread into the prepared pan and spread them out evenly to ensure uniform soaking and baking.
- Mix Custard: In a mixing bowl, whisk together the large eggs, eggnog, vanilla extract, cinnamon, and nutmeg until the eggs are fully incorporated and the mixture is smooth and fragrant.
- Soak the Bread: Pour the custard mixture evenly over the bread cubes, pushing down gently to help the bread soak up the liquid. Allow the casserole to rest while you preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C).
- Bake the Casserole: Place the baking dish in the preheated oven and bake for 20-25 minutes until the top is slightly golden brown and the custard is set. After baking, remove from the oven and let it rest for 5-10 minutes.
- Prepare Bourbon Syrup: While the casserole rests, heat the maple syrup until hot either on the stovetop or in the microwave. Stir in 1 oz of bourbon gradually, tasting to adjust the amount to your preference.
- Serve: Serve warm by slicing or spooning portions onto plates. Drizzle each serving with the warm bourbon maple syrup for an extra indulgent flavor.
Notes
- Using day-old bread or slightly stale french/brioche enhances soaking without becoming too soggy.
- Adjust the bourbon in the syrup to taste; omit for a non-alcoholic version and substitute with vanilla extract if desired.
- Letting the casserole rest after baking helps it set for easier slicing.
- For extra texture, sprinkle chopped nuts on top before baking.
