Ingredients
Dry Ingredients
- 1 cup + 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour or gluten-free flour (5.6 ounces), plus extra for dusting
- 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
Wet Ingredients
- 1 cup Greek yogurt (any fat percentage)
- 1 egg (beaten, for egg wash)
Optional Toppings
- Everything bagel seasoning
- Sesame seeds
- Onion flakes
- Poppy seeds
Instructions
- Preheat and Prepare Dry Ingredients: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and line a large baking sheet with parchment paper. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt until well combined.
- Make the Dough: Add the Greek yogurt to the dry ingredients and stir with a spatula until combined. Then, use your hands to knead the mixture into a dough ball about 20 times. The dough should be slightly sticky but not too dry. Cover it with a towel and let it rest for 10 minutes.
- Shape the Bagels: Lightly flour a clean surface and transfer the dough onto it. Form the dough into a log and cut it into 4 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a longer rope, then shape each into a bagel by pinching the ends together. Place the formed bagels on the prepared baking sheet.
- Apply Egg Wash and Add Toppings: In a small bowl, whisk the egg. Brush each bagel with the egg wash to help them brown beautifully. Sprinkle your choice of toppings such as everything bagel seasoning, sesame seeds, poppy seeds, onion flakes, or leave plain.
- Bake the Bagels: Bake in the preheated oven for 25 minutes or until the bagels are golden brown and puffed up. Remove them from the oven and let rest for 15 minutes before slicing to allow the crumb to set.
- Serve and Enjoy: Slice the bagels and spread with your favorite toppings like cream cheese, butter, or jam. Enjoy warm or at room temperature.
Notes
- Resting the dough before shaping helps to relax the gluten and results in a softer texture.
- If the dough is too sticky to handle, dust your hands and work surface with a little extra flour.
- These bagels do not require boiling before baking, making them simpler and quicker to prepare than traditional bagels.
- Store leftover bagels in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days, or freeze for longer storage.
- Feel free to experiment with different toppings or add herbs to the dough for extra flavor.
