- 1 ½ Tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
- 1 Teaspoon salt
- 1 Teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 Teaspoon onion powder
- ½ Teaspoon black pepper
Loco Moco Gravy
- 1 sweet onion (small, diced)
- 8 Ounces baby bella mushrooms (sliced)
- 3 Cloves garlic (finely minced)
- 3 Tablespoons cornstarch
- 2 Cups beef stock
- 1 Tablespoon soy sauce
- ½ Tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
For Frying Eggs
- 2 Tablespoons avocado oil (for frying eggs)
- 4 eggs
- salt and black pepper (to taste)
To Serve
- cooked rice (to serve)
- green onions (sliced, for garnish)
Instructions
- Make the Hamburger Patties: In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, panko breadcrumbs, egg, Worcestershire sauce, salt, garlic powder, onion powder, and black pepper. Mix gently until evenly distributed, being careful not to overwork the meat.
- Form Patties: Divide the mixture into 4 equal portions and shape each into a ball. Flatten them into 1 ½-inch thick hamburger patties to ensure even cooking.
- Cook Patties: Heat a large skillet over medium heat and add oil. Place the patties in the skillet and cook each side for 5 to 6 minutes until browned and cooked to your desired doneness.
- Set Aside Patties: Transfer the cooked patties to a plate and keep warm.
- Prepare Loco Moco Gravy: In the same skillet, add diced onions and sliced mushrooms. Sauté over medium heat for about 5 minutes until onions soften and brown.
- Add Garlic: Stir in the minced garlic and cook for 1 to 2 minutes more until fragrant.
- Thicken Gravy: Sprinkle cornstarch over the mixture and stir to combine well.
- Simmer Gravy: Pour in the beef stock, soy sauce, and Worcestershire sauce. Stir thoroughly and simmer over medium heat, stirring frequently until the gravy thickens to your liking. Add small splashes of beef stock if it becomes too thick.
- Keep Warm: Reduce heat to low and keep the gravy simmering gently while preparing eggs.
- Cook Eggs: Heat a medium skillet over medium heat, add 1 tablespoon of avocado oil, and fry the eggs sunny side up until the whites are set but yolks remain runny, typically 3-4 minutes.
- Season Eggs: Remove eggs from skillet and season with salt and pepper to taste.
- Assemble the Loco Moco: Plate cooked white rice, top with a hamburger patty, then ladle warm mushroom gravy over the patty and rice.
- Garnish and Serve: Place a fried egg on top and garnish with sliced green onions. Serve immediately.
Notes
- Do not overmix the hamburger meat to keep patties tender.
- The gravy thickness can be adjusted by adding more beef stock or letting it simmer longer.
- For authentic loco moco, cook eggs sunny side up with runny yolks.
- Use freshly cooked rice for best results, preferably short grain or jasmine rice.
- Feel free to substitute beef chuck with ground sirloin for leaner patties.
