Ingredients
Donut Batter
- 1 ½ cups all purpose flour
- ½ cup granulated sugar
- 2 teaspoons baking powder
- ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
- ½ cup whole milk
- ¼ cup maple syrup
- 4 tablespoons butter (melted)
- 1 large egg
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Maple Frosting
- 4 tablespoons butter (softened)
- 2 tablespoons maple syrup
- 1 ¼ cups powdered sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Toppings (Optional)
- ½ cup pecans (chopped)
Instructions
- Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a donut pan thoroughly with non-stick cooking spray to prevent sticking.
- Mix Wet Ingredients: In a large bowl, whisk together the whole milk, maple syrup, melted butter, egg, and vanilla extract until fully combined and smooth.
- Combine Dry Ingredients: In a separate bowl, whisk together the all purpose flour, granulated sugar, baking powder, and ground cinnamon ensuring an even mixture.
- Mix Batter: Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, stirring gently until just combined. Be careful not to over-mix to keep the donuts light and fluffy.
- Fill Donut Pan: Transfer the batter into a plastic zip-top bag or piping bag. Cut off a small tip from the corner and pipe the batter into the prepared donut pan cavities, filling each about half full.
- Bake Donuts: Place the pan in the preheated oven and bake for 16-18 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
- Cool Donuts: Remove the baked donuts from the oven and transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely before glazing to avoid melting the frosting.
- Prepare Maple Frosting: In a medium bowl, cream together the softened butter and maple syrup using an electric mixer for about one minute until smooth.
- Add Powdered Sugar: Gradually add the powdered sugar in batches while mixing at low speed to incorporate fully without creating a mess.
- Beat Frosting: Add the vanilla extract and increase mixer speed to medium-high, beating for about two minutes until the frosting is fluffy and light.
- Frost Donuts: Spread or pipe the maple frosting evenly over the cooled donuts for a beautiful finish.
- Add Toppings: Sprinkle the tops with chopped pecans or walnuts if desired for added texture and flavor.
Notes
- Do not over-mix the batter to keep donuts tender.
- Allow donuts to cool completely before frosting to prevent melting.
- Optional nuts add a nice crunch but can be omitted for nut-free versions.
- Use fresh maple syrup for best authentic flavor.
- Grease the pan well or use a silicone donut pan to ease release.
