Description

Delight in these comforting Meatball Mashed Potato Bowls topped with a rich Swedish beef gravy studded with tender green beans and finished with a dollop of sweet lingonberry jam and fresh herbs. This hearty meal combines creamy mashed potatoes with savory, creamy gravy for a classic Scandinavian-inspired dish that’s perfect for a cozy dinner.

Ingredients

Mashed Potatoes

  • 2 lbs potatoes, peeled and cubed
  • 4 tbsp butter
  • ½ cup milk or cream
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ½ tsp black pepper

Swedish Beef Gravy

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 small onion, diced
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 ½ cups frozen green beans
  • 3 tbsp butter
  • 3 tbsp flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • ½ cup sour cream
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp Dijon mustard
  • ½ tsp paprika
  • ¼ tsp nutmeg
  • ¼ tsp allspice
  • Salt and pepper to taste

For the Bowls

  • Prepared mashed potatoes
  • Swedish beef gravy with green beans
  • Lingonberry jam
  • Fresh parsley or chives for garnish

Instructions

  1. Cook the potatoes: Boil peeled, cubed potatoes in salted water for about 15 minutes or until they are fork tender.
  2. Mash the potatoes: Drain the cooked potatoes thoroughly and mash them with butter, milk or cream, salt, and black pepper until smooth and creamy. Set aside.
  3. Brown the beef: In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef together with the diced onion until both are browned. Add the minced garlic and cook for an additional minute until fragrant.
  4. Add the green beans: Stir the frozen green beans into the beef and onion mixture, cooking for 3 to 4 minutes until the beans are heated through.
  5. Make the gravy base: Push the beef and green bean mixture to one side of the skillet. In the cleared space, melt the butter and whisk in the flour. Cook this roux for 1 minute to remove the raw flour taste.
  6. Add broth and seasonings: Slowly whisk in the beef broth to the roux. Add Worcestershire sauce, Dijon mustard, paprika, nutmeg, allspice, salt, and pepper. Simmer the mixture until the gravy thickens.
  7. Make it creamy: Remove the skillet from heat and stir in the sour cream until the gravy is smooth and creamy.
  8. Assemble the bowls: Spoon the creamy mashed potatoes into serving bowls. Ladle the Swedish beef gravy and green beans over the mashed potatoes.
  9. Finish the dish: Top each bowl with a spoonful of lingonberry jam and garnish with fresh parsley or chives for a pop of color and flavor.

Notes

  • Use Yukon Gold potatoes for a naturally buttery and creamy mash.
  • Lingonberry jam adds a classic Scandinavian sweet-tart contrast to the savory dish.
  • For a richer gravy, substitute milk with cream in the mashed potatoes.
  • Adjust seasoning to taste, especially salt and pepper for the gravy.
  • Ground beef can be substituted with ground turkey for a leaner option.
