Description

This One-Pan Hamburger Green Bean Casserole is a comforting and hearty dish combining savory ground beef, tender green beans, creamy sauce, and melted cheese, all topped with crispy fried onion straws for a delightful crunch. Perfect for a family dinner, it’s easy to prepare in a single pan and baked until bubbly and golden.

Ingredients

Meat & Vegetables

  • 1 pound Ground Beef
  • ½ Onion (Diced)
  • 2 cans Cut Green Beans (Drained)

Sauce & Seasonings

  • 2 Tablespoon Butter
  • ¼ cup Flour
  • 1 cup Half & Half
  • 1 cup Beef Broth
  • ½ teaspoon Garlic Powder
  • ½ teaspoon Onion Powder
  • ½ teaspoon Black Pepper
  • ¾ teaspoon Salt
  • ¼ cup Sour Cream

Cheese & Toppings

  • ½ cup Shredded Cheddar Cheese
  • ½ cup Mozzarella Cheese
  • ¾ cup Fried Onion Straws (Optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Set your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit to prepare for baking the casserole.
  2. Cook Ground Beef: In a Dutch oven or oven-safe skillet, cook the ground beef over medium-high heat until no longer pink, breaking it apart during cooking. Drain any excess fat, then transfer the beef to a bowl and set aside.
  3. Sauté Onions & Make Roux: In the same pan, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the diced onions and sauté for about 3 minutes until softened. Stir in the flour, cooking and stirring constantly for one minute to form a roux.
  4. Add Liquids: Gradually whisk in the half & half and beef broth, ensuring there are no lumps. Allow the sauce to simmer for about 7 minutes until it thickens.
  5. Season the Sauce: Stir in garlic powder, onion powder, black pepper, and salt to combine flavors thoroughly.
  6. Combine Ingredients: Add the cooked ground beef, drained green beans, and sour cream into the sauce, stirring well to coat everything evenly. If your skillet is not oven-safe, transfer the mixture to a casserole dish.
  7. Add Cheese Toppings: Sprinkle shredded cheddar and mozzarella cheeses evenly over the top of the casserole mixture.
  8. Top with Onion Straws: For extra crunch, add a layer of fried onion straws on top (optional).
  9. Bake: Place the casserole uncovered into the preheated oven and bake for 30 minutes, until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
  10. Rest & Serve: Let the casserole stand for 5 minutes after baking to set, then serve warm.

Notes

  • If you don’t have an oven-safe skillet, use a regular pan for cooking then transfer to a casserole dish before baking.
  • Fried onion straws are optional but add great texture to the finished dish.
  • You can substitute sour cream with Greek yogurt for a tangier option.
  • For a lower-fat version, use lean ground beef and reduced-fat cheeses.
  • Ensure to drain canned green beans thoroughly to avoid excess liquid in the casserole.
