Ingredients
Meat Mixture
- 1 pound ground beef
- ½ cup finely chopped onion
- 1 ½ cups pizza sauce
- 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
- ½ teaspoon garlic powder
- Salt and pepper, to taste
Buns
- 4 hamburger buns or English muffins, split
- Butter or olive oil, for brushing (optional)
Toppings
- 1-2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
- Mini pepperoni, as desired (optional)
- Fresh basil leaves, for garnish (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper or foil to prepare for toasting the buns and baking the assembled burgers.
- Cook Ground Beef and Onions: In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef along with the chopped onions. Break up the beef as it cooks, and continue until it’s browned and no longer pink. Drain any excess grease from the skillet.
- Simmer Meat Mixture: Stir in the pizza sauce, Italian seasoning, garlic powder, salt, and pepper into the cooked beef and onions. Allow this mixture to simmer for a few minutes until it is warm and slightly thickened, blending all the flavors.
- Toast the Buns: Place the split hamburger buns or English muffins cut side up on the prepared baking sheet. For extra crispness and flavor, brush them lightly with melted butter or olive oil, and optionally sprinkle a bit of extra garlic powder. Toast them in the preheated oven for 2-3 minutes.
- Assemble the Pizza Burgers: Spoon the warm meat mixture evenly over each toasted bun half. Generously sprinkle shredded mozzarella cheese on top. If desired, add mini pepperoni slices over the cheese for a classic pizza touch.
- Bake to Melt Cheese: Return the assembled buns to the oven and bake for about 5 minutes, or until the mozzarella cheese is melted and bubbly. For a golden and slightly crispy cheese top, you can broil for an additional 1 minute, watching carefully to prevent burning.
- Garnish and Serve: Remove from the oven, and if preferred, top with fresh basil leaves for added aroma and flavor. Serve immediately while warm.
Notes
- You can use hamburger buns or English muffins as the base depending on your texture preference.
- Brushing the buns with butter or olive oil before toasting enhances flavor and crunchiness.
- Mini pepperoni is optional but adds a classic pizza element to the burgers.
- Broiling at the end should be closely monitored to avoid burning the cheese.
- Leftovers can be refrigerated and reheated in the oven to maintain crispness.
