Description

This classic Pear Pie features a tender, flaky crust filled with spiced, juicy pears and topped with a sweet crumbly topping. Perfectly baked to golden perfection, it’s a delightful dessert ideal for gatherings or cozy nights in. The combination of cinnamon and brown sugar enhances the natural sweetness of the pears, making this pie a comforting and delicious treat.

Ingredients

Pie Crust

  • 1 store-bought or homemade pie crust

Filling

  • 1/4 cup (50 grams) granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup (50 grams) brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup (35 grams) all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 6 firm pears, peeled and sliced 1/4-inch thick (peeling optional)

Crumb Topping

  • 1/3 cup all-purpose flour
  • 3 Tablespoons salted butter, melted
  • 1/3 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • Pinch of salt

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and place a baking sheet on the middle rack to catch any drips and help the pie bake evenly.
  2. Prepare Crust: Roll out the pie crust on a floured surface to about a 12-inch round. Fold into quarters for easy transfer and place it gently into your pie dish. Crimp or flute the edges if desired, then refrigerate while preparing filling.
  3. Make Filling: In a large bowl, combine 1/4 cup granulated sugar, 1/4 cup brown sugar, 1/4 cup flour, and 1 1/2 teaspoons cinnamon. Add sliced pears and toss gently with the sugar-spice mixture. Let the pears marinate for 5 minutes to draw out juices and blend flavors.
  4. Prepare Crumb Topping: In a small bowl, mix 1/3 cup flour, melted 3 tablespoons butter, 1/3 cup sugar, 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon, and a pinch of salt. Use your fingers or a fork to combine until crumbly but avoid overmixing to keep texture light.
  5. Assemble Pie: Pour the pear mixture into the chilled pie crust, layering evenly and preserving some juices in the bowl for extra moisture. Press pears lightly to flatten if needed. Evenly sprinkle the crumb topping over the pears.
  6. Bake: Place the pie on the preheated baking sheet and bake in the oven for 50 minutes. If the crust edges brown too quickly, cover them with foil or a pie shield to prevent burning while the filling finishes baking.
  7. Cool: Remove the pie from the oven and transfer to a cooling rack. Allow it to cool completely for 2 to 3 hours to let the filling thicken and set properly.
  8. Serve: Slice and serve room temperature or slightly warm, optionally topped with vanilla ice cream for a classic pairing.

Notes

  • Choosing firm pears like Bosc or Anjou works best to maintain shape during baking.
  • Peeling pears is optional; leaving the peel adds texture and nutrients.
  • If the crust edges brown too quickly, use aluminum foil or a pie shield as a protective cover.
  • Cooling the pie completely is crucial to allow the filling to set and avoid runny slices.
  • Store leftover pie covered at room temperature for up to two days or refrigerated for longer freshness.
