Description

This Philly Cheesesteak Meatloaf combines the classic flavors of a Philly cheesesteak sandwich into a hearty, savory meatloaf. Ground beef is mixed with vegetables and seasonings, layered with sautéed peppers, onions, mushrooms, and melted provolone and mozzarella cheeses for a comforting, crowd-pleasing meal perfect for dinner.

Ingredients

Meatloaf Mixture

  • 2 pounds ground beef (80/20 is best)
  • 1 cup breadcrumbs
  • 2 large eggs (beaten)
  • ½ cup milk
  • ½ cup green bell pepper (diced)
  • ½ cup onion (diced)
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper

Sautéed Vegetables

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 large onion (thinly sliced)
  • 1 large green bell pepper (thinly sliced)
  • 8 ounces mushrooms (sliced)
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt (to taste)
  • Black pepper (to taste)

Cheeses

  • 6 slices provolone cheese
  • 1 cup provolone cheese (shredded or grated)
  • ½ cup mozzarella cheese (shredded or grated)

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven and Prepare Pan: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9×5 inch loaf pan to prevent sticking.
  2. Make Meatloaf Mixture: In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, beaten eggs, milk, diced green bell pepper, diced onion, garlic powder, salt, and black pepper. Mix gently until just combined to keep the meatloaf tender.
  3. Sauté Vegetables: Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add thinly sliced onion, green bell pepper, and mushrooms. Cook for 5-7 minutes until vegetables are softened. Stir in Worcestershire sauce and season with salt and black pepper to taste. Remove from heat and let cool slightly.
  4. Layer Meatloaf: Press half of the meatloaf mixture evenly into the bottom of the prepared loaf pan. Spread the sautéed vegetable mixture evenly over the meat layer.
  5. Add Cheese Layer: Lay 6 slices of provolone cheese over the vegetable layer, covering it completely to create a cheesy center.
  6. Top Meatloaf: Carefully add the remaining meatloaf mixture on top, pressing gently to seal the edges and enclose the cheese and vegetable layers.
  7. Bake Initial Layer: Place the loaf pan in the preheated oven and bake for 45 minutes until the meat is partially cooked.
  8. Top with Shredded Cheese and Finish Baking: Remove the meatloaf from the oven. Evenly sprinkle the shredded provolone and mozzarella cheeses over the top. Return to the oven and bake for an additional 10-15 minutes until cheese is melted and bubbly.
  9. Rest and Serve: Let the meatloaf rest for 10 minutes in the pan before slicing. Serve warm for a delicious Philly cheesesteak-inspired meal.

Notes

  • Use ground beef with 80/20 fat ratio for juicy and flavorful meatloaf.
  • Allow sautéed vegetables to cool before layering to prevent the cheese from melting prematurely.
  • Resting the meatloaf before slicing helps retain juices and maintain shape.
  • Feel free to substitute provolone with mozzarella or cheddar for a different flavor profile.
  • Leftovers can be refrigerated for up to 3 days or frozen for longer storage.
