Ingredients
Cookie Dough
- 120 g (1/2 cup) unsalted butter, softened
- 80 g (1/3 cup) granulated sugar
- 70 g (1/3 cup) light brown sugar
- 1 large egg, at room temperature
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 190 g (1 1/2 cups) all-purpose flour
- 3/4 tsp baking soda
- 3/4 tsp salt
- 1–2 tsp red gel food coloring (or liquid red coloring)
- 1 tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder (about 10 g)
- 15 Oreo cookies, roughly crushed
Topping
- 4 Oreo cookies, roughly chopped, for topping
Instructions
- Preheat Oven: Preheat the oven to 175°C (347°F) and line two baking sheets with parchment paper to prepare for baking.
- Cream Butter and Sugars: In a large mixing bowl, cream the softened butter with the granulated sugar and light brown sugar for about 2 minutes until the mixture is light and fluffy, which helps create a soft texture.
- Add Wet Ingredients: Add the egg, vanilla extract, and red food coloring to the butter mixture, then mix again for about 2 minutes until the batter is smooth and evenly colored throughout.
- Combine Dry Ingredients: Sift together the flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt, then gently fold these into the wet dough just until combined to avoid overmixing.
- Incorporate Oreos: Stir in the roughly crushed Oreo cookies, mixing briefly so they are evenly distributed throughout the dough.
- Shape Cookies: Using your hands or a cookie scoop, form the dough into balls and place them on the prepared baking sheets, spacing them about 2 inches (5 cm) apart. Lightly flatten the tops if needed, then add the chopped Oreo pieces on top for extra texture and presentation.
- Bake: Bake the cookies for 13–15 minutes until they are puffed with set edges but still have soft centers, ensuring a tender cookie.
- Cool: Let the cookies cool on the baking sheet for a few minutes to firm up, then transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely before serving or storing.
Notes
- Use gel food coloring for a more vibrant red color without affecting the dough consistency.
- Make sure the butter is softened to room temperature for easier creaming and better texture.
- Do not overmix the dough once the flour is added to maintain tender cookies.
- Spacing cookies adequately on the baking sheet prevents them from merging during baking.
- These cookies can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 5 days.
