Ingredients

Meat Sauce

  • 1 pound ground beef, cooked and drained
  • 1 tablespoon minced garlic
  • 1 (16-ounce) can diced tomatoes
  • 1 (8-ounce) can tomato sauce
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper

Noodle Mixture

  • 8 ounces uncooked egg noodles
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • 4 ounces cream cheese

Cheese

  • 8 ounces mozzarella cheese (reserve some for garnish)


Instructions

  1. Prepare the Meat Sauce: In a large cast iron skillet, cook the ground beef over medium heat until no longer pink. Drain off any excess fat. Add minced garlic, diced tomatoes, tomato sauce, salt, and black pepper. Stir well to combine. Cover and simmer on low heat for 20 minutes, stirring occasionally. For a deeper flavor, simmer up to 40 minutes. Adjust seasoning with additional salt to taste.
  2. Cook the Noodles: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Boil the egg noodles according to package instructions until al dente. Drain and immediately transfer to a large bowl. Add cream cheese (cut into small squares for easier melting) and sour cream to the hot noodles. Mix thoroughly until creamy and well combined.
  3. Prepare for Layering: Once the meat sauce is ready, spoon most of it into a separate bowl, leaving a thin layer of sauce at the bottom of the skillet.
  4. Layer Noodles: Add half of the sour cream and cream cheese noodle mixture evenly over the sauce in the skillet.
  5. Layer Meat: Spoon half of the reserved meat sauce over the noodles.
  6. Add Cheese: Sprinkle half of the mozzarella cheese evenly over the meat layer.
  7. Repeat Layers: Layer the remaining noodles, then the remaining meat mixture, and finally the remaining mozzarella cheese on top.
  8. Bake: Cover the skillet and bake in the preheated oven for 30 minutes, until the casserole is heated through and the cheese is melted and bubbly.
  9. Serve and Garnish: Remove from the oven, let it rest for a few minutes, then garnish with the reserved mozzarella cheese if desired before serving.
