Description

A delicious and comforting Strawberry Apple Crumble featuring a sweet and tangy fruit filling topped with a buttery, crisp oat crumble. Perfectly baked to golden brown, this dessert is easy to prepare and great for serving warm with ice cream, custard, or whipped cream.

Ingredients

Fruit Filling

  • 3 cups Strawberries, stems removed and halved or quartered
  • 3 cups Apples, peeled, cored and thinly sliced (or diced if preferred)
  • 1/2 lemon, juice of
  • 1/2 cup White granulated sugar
  • 1/2 tsp Nutmeg
  • 3 tbsp All-purpose or plain flour

Crumble Topping

  • 2/3 cup Rolled oats
  • 1/3 cup All-purpose or plain flour
  • 1/3 cup White granulated sugar
  • 1/3 cup Brown sugar
  • 6 tbsp Unsalted butter, softened and cubed
  • Pinch of salt
  • Pinch of cinnamon (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat and Prepare Fruit Filling: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). In a large mixing bowl, combine the strawberries, apples, lemon juice, white sugar, nutmeg, and 3 tablespoons of flour. Mix thoroughly to coat the fruit evenly. Let the mixture rest for at least 5 minutes to allow the juices to release, which helps create a flavorful sauce as it bakes.
  2. Make the Crumble Topping: In a separate bowl, mix together the rolled oats, 1/3 cup flour, white sugar, brown sugar, salt, and cinnamon if using. Add the softened, cubed butter to the dry ingredients. Using your hands, rub or pinch the butter into the mixture until it forms a crumbly texture with small pea-sized pieces. This will create that perfect crunchy topping.
  3. Assemble and Bake: Pour the fruit filling evenly into a baking dish. Evenly sprinkle the crumble topping over the fruit. Place the dish in the preheated oven and bake for 45 to 50 minutes, or until the fruit filling is bubbly and the topping has turned crisp and golden brown.
  4. Rest and Serve: Remove the crumble from the oven and allow it to rest for 10 minutes before serving. This rest allows the filling to set slightly for easier serving. Enjoy warm topped with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, a drizzle of custard, or whipped cream for an indulgent treat.

Notes

  • You can dice the apples rather than slice them depending on your preference.
  • Letting the fruit rest before baking helps release natural juices, enhancing the flavor and texture of the filling.
  • Use cold, softened butter for best crumble texture.
  • You can customize the spices by adding cinnamon or adjusting nutmeg levels to taste.
  • Store leftovers covered in the refrigerator for up to 3 days and reheat before serving.
