Description

This Turkey Avocado Sandwich is a fresh and flavorful meal combining tender deli turkey, creamy avocado, crisp lettuce, and juicy tomato slices on lightly toasted sourdough bread. Enhanced by a tangy homemade mayo-based sauce, this sandwich offers a perfect balance of savory, creamy, and crunchy textures, making it an ideal quick and satisfying lunch.

Ingredients

Sauce

  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise (Best Foods/Hellman’s recommended)
  • 2 tablespoons sour cream
  • 2 teaspoons yellow mustard
  • Pinch of salt

Sandwich

  • 2 slices sourdough bread (or other artisan bread, lightly toasted and cooled)
  • 2 slices provolone cheese
  • 3 ounces deli turkey (or leftover cooked turkey)
  • 2 large pieces of green leaf lettuce
  • 1/2 ripe avocado, thinly sliced
  • 3 slices tomato
  • 3 thin slices red onion
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Make Sauce: In a small bowl, combine the mayonnaise, sour cream, and yellow mustard. Add a pinch of salt and whisk the mixture until it becomes smooth and well blended. Cover the bowl and refrigerate the sauce until you are ready to assemble your sandwich. This sauce makes enough for several sandwiches.
  2. Prepare Bread: Lightly toast the slices of sourdough bread until just golden, then allow them to cool fully to prevent sogginess when assembling.
  3. Assemble Sandwich: Spread the prepared sauce generously on both pieces of toasted bread. On one slice, layer the provolone cheese followed by the deli turkey. On the other slice, layer the green leaf lettuce, thin slices of avocado, tomato slices, and red onion. Season the vegetable layers with a pinch of salt and pepper to enhance the flavors.
  4. Finish and Serve: Carefully sandwich the two pieces of bread together, ensuring the fillings are evenly distributed. Using a sharp knife, cut the sandwich in half to make it easier to eat. Serve immediately to enjoy the crisp textures and fresh flavors at their best.

Notes

  • The sauce can be made ahead and kept refrigerated for up to 3 days.
  • Use leftover cooked turkey if preferred for a more homey flavor.
  • Choose ripe avocados for creamy texture and best taste.
  • Properly cooling toasted bread prevents it from becoming soggy when sauce is applied.
  • Feel free to substitute provolone with other mild cheese like mozzarella or Swiss.
